The Chevrolet Corvette has been a fixture at the world's racetracks ever since Zora Arkus Duntov dropped a Chevy V8 into the car in 1955. GM's infamous racing ban of 1963 was prompted by the 1957 resolution from the Automobile Manufacturers Association, and this led to limited engineering support for teams that raced Corvettes. By the late 1980's, however, times had changed and GM began to openly support competition, mainly as a way to improve its cars.
